frekwently asked kwestions
Q. How many quotes can I store in a Kid Kwotes account?
A. Free accounts are limited to 50 quotes. If you hit this limit, we hope you see how beneficial the service is to you and your family, and you decide to support our efforts. By making a small, one-time donation, the limit on your account will be permanently lifted - allowing you to store as many quotes as your children (or others) utter.
Q. Why is your website kidkwotes.com, and not kidquotes.com?
A. The latter had already been registered, and we thought it could be fun to imitate how a child might spell a word they were unfamiliar with.
Q. What are Subjects, and how do they relate to Quotes?
A. Think of a Subject as the primary author of a Quote. As shown in the sample Quotes on the home page, you may wish to include the comments of others along with the Subject's words, but they are not the primary Subject for the Quote. Quotes can also be filtered, if you wish to only display all the Quotes by a specific Subject (think: person).
Q. Why would I want to provide a birth date for Subjects?
A. When a birth date is provided, the age (in years) of the Subject at the time of the Quote will be displayed below what was said (e.g. "4 yrs"). Adding a birth date is optional, of course.
Q. What are Places, and how do they relate to Quotes?
A. While optional, a Place can be associated with a Quote, to offer further background information. Quotes can be filtered by Place, if you wish to only display all the Quotes that occurred in/at a specific location.
Q. What if I don't want to give you my name or phone number?
A. That's fine. We don't necessarily want or need more than just a way to contact you; which is why only an email address is required to create an account. As long as we have a way to reach our users if something happens that will effect access to the system (such as planned server maintenance, etc), we're happy. We, too, value our privacy more than most, so would rather see you keep "yourself to yourself" (as they say in Scotland).
Q. Are my private Quotes displayed publicly on the home page of your web site?
A. By default, a random Quote is retrieved from the pool of Quotes in the system and displayed on our home page - simply to help visitors how valuable it may be to them to begin recording quotes by their own kids. In the interest of privacy, both the Quote and associated Note will be redacted using any/all Subjects defined in the system, across all accounts (effectively masking who said what). You can choose to completely exclude your own Quotes from appearing, however, by adjusting your preferences in your Account Settings accordingly.
Q. What is the Kwick Kwote link for?
A. The older you get, the faster your memory fades. So, when your toddler/child utters something you just have to remember, you literally only have few moments before the exact phrase will come into question in your head. So, the Kwick Kwote feature is a special link (URL) - unique to your user account - that allows you access to the "add a quote" form as quickly as possible. If you pre-configure your mobile phone (instructions are displayed below the link, in your Account Settings), you can begin documenting exactly what they said within a few seconds of it hitting your ears.
Q. Can my spouse / family members have a separate login to access my account?
A. Sure thing. Login then visit the Users section. There you will be able to create additional Admin users on your account that will have the exact same access to manage your quotes as you do. Memories are always captured better when it's a collaborative effort.
Q. Is there a way to give Grandma and Grandpa, or other relatives access to view our family quotes, or even add new quotes they hear?
A. Yup. After you login, visit the Users section. Select "Guest" as the account type, then set what level of access they should have (View Only or Add & View). Once their limited account is created, you'll see an Invite button. Click that to send them an auto-login link via email. Tell them to save the email for future reference, or click the link contained in it, then create a Favorite or Bookmark to that specific page that they can then use again at any time. They'll only be able to do whatever you've allowed them to.
Q. How can I see what quotes other Admins or Guests have added to my account?
A. On the Users page, simply click the blue number to the right of their user account. If it's greater than "0" (zero), doing so will open the Quotes page and show you only the ones they have entered.
Q. Once I put my kid's quotes into your website, can I get them back out again?
A. Certainly! We don't want to hold anyone's data hostage. Near the bottom of your Account Settings, you will see an option to export / backup ALL your quotes as a PDF (great for printing), as a CSV file (useful for importing into a Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice spreadsheet), as a plain text file, or even in JSON format for doing things even more advanced with your quotes. You (and your Guests)also have the ability to download a full, or filtered, list of Quotes on the My Quotes page as a PDF - great for sharing with the Subject of the Quotes or to Grandmas and Grandpas that love their grand kids!
Q. Can I, or others, receive a notice whenever a new quote is added to the account?
A. By default, any/all Admin users on the account will receive an email when a new quote is added. So, if you're working collaboratively with your spouse, kids, or other family, to collect and archive memories, you'll know as soon as another Admin (or allowed Guest) submits a quote. You can even choose to send new quotes to Guest users, as well, or turn off the email notifications. Just visit your Account Settings and look for the Notify on New options under the Your Preferences section.
Q. Wouldn't it be great if a random quote could be sent to my family members and/or friends?
A. Yeah, that would be fun! Fortunately, we thought so too, and made it possible to configure in the Account Settings. You can select which weekdays, the time of day, and to whom such emails should be sent (Admin and/or Guest users, and up to 5 other email addresses). Each recipient will receive the same random quote pulled from your own account, so you can all laugh and giggle together. Hint: To make the scheduled email send more accurately, be sure to set the Time Zone of your account.
Q. I'm a bit on the paranoid / cautious / smart side, and would really appreciate some sort of automated, external backup of my data. Is that possible?
A. Hey, the best "Plan B" is a "Plan A" that already takes precautions forif/when something breaks. For this reason there's a feature in Account Settings called Email Backup. Enable it, and select a specific week day, or day of the month, and Kid Kwotes will automatically email you a JSON backup file of all your data (Quotes, Subjects and Places) on a regular basis. With file that's attached, even if our website dies, or your account somehow gets erased, your Quotes, Subjects and Places can easily be restored once it comes back up - even to another or new account. An ounce of prevention is worth ton of cure. If you're serious about archiving your memories, enable Email Backup now.
Q. If I change my mind, and want to delete my account, and all data in it, can I do so?
A. Absolutely. Near the bottom of your Account Settings, you will see an option to delete about anything and everything contained within your account, or the account itself. Again, we believe in privacy and honor your right to be forgotten and left alone. If you choose to delete the entire account, an email will be sent to all Admins on the account with a JSON backup of your current data in the account. The JSON file may later allow you to restore your data to a new Kid Kwotes account, if desired.
Q. What is your privacy policy?
A. Simple. Beyond the random redacted quotes shared by default on the home page of this website, we don't share anything you submit with anyone else. If you don't even want redacted quotes shared with others, you have the option in Account Settings to prevent your redacted quotes from being included.
